How long does it take for SEO to take effect and show results

The SEO is perhaps the most challenging and dynamic goal in the world of digital marketing. I think the main reason for that is that we are not in control of the search engine algorithm, and day after day professional digital marketers are wearing their lab coat experimenting on what works, what doesn't work and even what no longer works.
“How long will it take me to get ranked #1 for my keywords?” or ”when will our website rank in the #1 spot?”, and the answers is there is “No Guarantee”. The question is actually in itself is misguided, because the question is from an understanding of SEO that was once the reality but no longer is, which is the from Old SEO to the Dynamic SEO.
The Death of Old “Guaranteed Ranked #1 SEO”
In the context of Google as the target of the SEO campaign it has changed a lot way back more than 6 years ago. How many times did Google have a known and unknown change in its core algorithm for search?
Here is a summary of Google Algorithm Updates since 2011 as monitored by since January 2011 where was penalized by Google for artificially boosting their rank in the results of the search giant.

So that was a lot of change (a total of 106) that drag many websites to the bottom of the search results after being manually penalized and affected by the changes in the search algorithm.
The Birth of Dynamic SEO
The death of the old SEO gives way to the birth of the new and dynamic SEO.
The term dynamic means that it is characterized by constant change, activity, or progress; and because it is dynamic, SEO takes as long as it takes because it always needs constantly optimizing considering the fact that our target search engine, especially Google, is keep changing its algorithm in order to show the most relevant results to its users.
So under this dynamic SEO how long does it take for a website to show substantial result?
This is a tricky question because we have to consider the answer to that question in the context of the following factors:
1.      Search Result in Desktop vs Mobile
2.      SEO targeting international vs Local or Country Targeting
3.      Low vs  High Competition keywords
4.      Head terms/keyword  vs  Long-Tail Keywords

1. Desktop vs Mobile Search Results

Mobile device has influenced a lot on when and how consumers search for the answer to their problems and queries in the search engine.
In 2015  Search Engine Land shared on its blog that Stats on desktop search from comScore routinely show the overall amount has risen from month to month. Rather, it’s that mobile searches have been a growing new segment that have caught up and now overtaken desktop search.
Today, mobile represents 65 percent of digital media time, while the desktop is becoming a "secondary touch point" for an increasing number of digital users according to comscore report.
So, in relation to the question of how long does it take for SEO to show substantial result? In the context of mobile search results your site will not show significant effect if your website is not mobile-friendly and has poor UX design.

In a blog last November 4, 2016, Google published a blog post officially stating its intention to roll out a mobile-first index and explaining why it wanted to do that. It was huge news since the new approach is an opposite approach from how things have worked for a long time. A piece of advice: You should make sure that your mobile pages contain the same content as your desktop pages, ensure that structured data markup is present on your mobile URLs and so on.

Naturally, it is not an easy thing to rank if you are targeting the whole wide world it takes a longer time compare to local targeting. So if you are targeting local consumer, make sure you advice Google by setting your targeting in the Google Search Console to your target country in order to narrow down your competition.
A piece of advice: for local search targeting - Increase your brand awareness campaign through social media and PPC and to be more engaging to your customer and potential customer, because increasing brand awareness within your local target market increases your brand related search which easily helps you rank within your industry. You can do this to supplement your SEO for industry related keywords.
For example, it possibly takes those website who are targeting various countries. to rank in the competitive keywords “grill restaurant in downtown area” than a brand related search such as “Buffet Palace grill”.  This is also a reality even for time

3. Low vs High Competition Industry and Keywords

Naturally, in the business world those who are already in the market for more than 5 years has a big advantage over the startups. The same as with the search engine world. If you try to rank in the very competitive industry and high value keywords such as those in the Finance related keywords then you have a lot of competitor to beat for the industry related keywords.
Take for example the search result for “cheap car insurance” where there are 41.5 million search result, compare to “stone carving tools” where there are only 1.4 million search results.
So that is one factor that we have to put into consideration because the more competitive is the keyword or term in the search engine the bigger will be the cost for implementing SEO until it ranks to the first page in the Google SERP.

4.Head Term vs Long tail keywods

This is especially applicable for very competitive industry. If your website is new and you have few pages indexed by Google then chances are you will not rank that quickly in the head term/keyword.
Using our example above, car insurance niche is a very competitive and saturated by 100 millions of pages in the search result, so no one can expect to rank in just a matter of 6 months of within a year against the websites that have more than 100 pages indexed by Google for more than 5 years with already a high Domain Authority and Page Authority.
The solution is to box around your competitor using long tail keywords and you will rank in that long tail keywords in 10 weeks.
Here's where you really have to tip your hat to long tail keywords, because by targeting the long tail you can start to build enough authority in the industry to beat stronger competition and rank higher for more competitive keywords in your niche.
